Google Documents: a Life Saver

Google Documents: a Life Saver

As a busy University student, balancing an impossible schedule quickly becomes the norm. While classes and assignments are difficult enough on their own to keep track of, attempting extra-curricular activities on top of your education commitments, can often appear a daunting task.

In regards to myself, in addition to being a proud Laurier golden-hawk, I am also the Program Director for Radio Laurier. This senior position within Radio Laurier and under WLUSP (Wilfrid Laurier University Student Publications) as a whole, requires a significant amount of communication between myself, the DJ's and other senior management.

Google Documents (Google Docs) allows myself and those I work with to quickly and efficiently communicate with one another. Anyone who has been invited to the document can edit, contribute and communicate in real time, from anywhere with internet access.

The flexibility of Google Documents allows our flow of information to be edited in real time, taking on dimensions of online forums, where other invited users and myself organize and coordinate our responsibilities within Radio Laurier.

As Baym elaborates in chapter 3 of, Personal Connections in the Digital Age, Google Documents can be best categorized as "lean" media, however due to its features which allow the interjection of image, text, and link which facilitates the communication of multiple cues, also shares characteristics of "rich" media.

  1. I'm right on the same page with you Joseph. This past summer, I worked in an office that relied heavily on Google Docs to share and edit content for different events that we were hosting. It was very convenient because when something was uploaded to the drive, then everybody in the office was able to see it - instead of the entire staff huddling around a singular computer. Had we not used Google Docs, I feel as though the efficiency rate would depreciate significantly.

  2. I definitely can agree with you about the helpful communicative qualities of Google docs. I find it is one of the best ways to communicate with a group of people quickly and efficiently. When I went to a 5 day festival in the summer to camp out, it was so much easier to communicate over google Docs with who is bringing what, since we had a large group of people. It makes it so much more efficient to have everyone write in their contribution of what to bring, instead of spending your time asking everyone individually. In addition to this, I used it for a lot of group assignments and projects through university and it really helped being able to add in your part of the project and edit out what you think isn't suited. The overall result of the project is much more well done with everyone being able to share there opinions and make changes within the document. I would definitely recommend using google docs for any event with a large group of people to save time and effort. Just as well to use it for any type of group work.

  3. I totally agree with how convenient google docs is. Not only is it great for group assignments but the ability to read and edit anywhere from any device makes communication easier than ever. I believe that anyone with any profession can find this application useful. For example, it could be used in the work place but also with roommates for things such as grocery lists. To conclude, google docs makes group work, chores, and task more efficient.
