Social Media and Politics

In recent political elections, candidates presence on social media has become a large factor in their success and has further developed the political discussion among the millennial generation. When looking at this, I found it interesting just how this technology is changing how we look at and are influenced by politics all around the world. In class, we have learned how power is the ability to influence and along with technology can work to persuade larger amount of people. In this case, social media technologies are becoming new and increasingly popular ways for candidates to connect with their voters as well as for people to discuss the events with those around them. Social media is now one of the main ways the millennial generation is staying up to date with political elections. Social media is motivating this group, who has originally been of the lowest voting population, to become involved and get more informed though social media. The article attached is from Forbes and explains just how social media is evolving and influencing the minds of voters.

  1. I’m really happy that someone posted about this. Although I am a Canadian citizen and will not be voting in the 2016 American Election, it has been really interesting to watch both candidates campaigns evolve with social media. I would say that it has been entertaining to watch candidates try to adapt to social media and seem “hip” through their use of memes and posts. I also find it terrifying that there will likely be many individuals that will vote based on what they see on social media without doing additional research.

  2. This article brings to mind the 'Twitter Revolution' or 'Green Revolution' that happened a few years back. Even though young people are often criticized for not understanding the seriousness of social media, I think they understand it more than they're given credit it for. The results of this election are definitely going to be heavily impacted by social media, which is both scary and amazing at the same time - amazing because people are actually affecting social change through social media, but scary because, well, Trump.
